Because of its large size, I've been using my 5D Mk2 less and less. So, I sold one of my Canon lenses to get the D-Lux 5.

I am not writing to endorse either product, or tell you which I think is better. The results are subjective and dependent of a photographer's skills. So, why the D-Lux 5 and not the Panasonic LX-5 which is essentially the same camera with a cheapter price tag?

I've owned both the D-Lux 4 and the Panasonic LX3. After shooting with an LX3 for well over a year, I sold it to purchase the D-Lux 4. I then sold the D-Lux 4 around when D-Lux 5 was announced.

I chose D-Lux 5 because:

1. I dislike the look of the Panasonic LX-5. I like the design of the D-Lux--it's simple, understated yet elegant. I'm a designer so, I do care about the looks.

In fact,I don't care about the "red dot." I would much prefer it without the Leica logo and just plain black.

2. I get a legitimate version of Adobe Lightroom--LR is an important tool to me, because I post-process most, if not all of my images.

3. I prefer how the D-Lux renders the colors and out of focus areas. The difference is not obvious unless you've shot with Leica lenses on Leica digital cameras.

Most people don't believe in the existence of the "Leica-look," nor care. But, IMO, it's there--through a little post-processing. Just like how Foveon images have their "look" when processed using Sigma Pro Photo Software, Leica D-Lux 4 has a smoother blur and more 3-Dness when post-processed vignette is added and through a little tweak of levels. Panasonic rendering simply do not have it (in the same way Leica does). Now, I haven't fully tested the D-Lux 5, but I presume it'll be similar to the D-Lux 4 results (and hopefully better).

4. D-Lux resale value is better. I tend to cycle through my digital cameras rather quickly.

Now, I'm looking forward to shooting with it and taking it with me to a trip to Myanmar. My thoughts on it will definitely be posted on Flickr.
